Torpedo Boats in the New Steel Navy, presented by Rob Doane From 1875 to 1897, the Herreshoff Manufacturing Co. designed and produced eight torpedo boats for the United States Navy. The Herreshoff brothers started their company just before the Navy underwent the most radical transformation in its history. The old wooden sailing ships of the Civil War-era Navy were set aside in favor of powerful coal-fired warships with steel hulls that carried an array of new weapons, including torpedoes. Why…
